URGENT ALERT TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
The Banyamulenge community, a Tutsi ethnic group, residing predominantly in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is currently facing a severe, rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis. Since 2017, the Congolese government, in coordination with neighboring Burundi and various militia groups, has been systematically perpetrating a series of heinous atrocities against the Banyamulenge people, including targeted violence and displacement.
REPORTED VIOLATIONS:
- Over 500,000 cows were stolen, devastating the community's livelihood and food security
- 150 churches, many historically significant and central to community life, were destroyed
- 200 schools, critically affecting education and prospects
- 260 medical centers, severely impairing access to healthcare
- Thousands of Banyamulenge were killed, for example, Major Kaminzobe and Captain Kabongo, Ntayoberwa, who were burned alive and eaten in the sight of all because they were Tutsi only
Despite numerous alerts, international condemnations, and calls for intervention from the Banyamulenge community, the global response has been largely silent or inaction.
CURRENT SITUATION:
Minembwe, a key Banyamulenge settlement and strategic location, is now effectively blockaded by Burundi and Congolese security forces. This blockade prevents access to essential food supplies, medicine, clean water, and other vital resources. There are credible reports indicating preparation for both ground and aerial military assaults on Minembwe, heightening the imminent danger to thousands of civilians, including women and children.
CALL TO ACTION:
We urgently call upon the international community, including United Nations agencies, regional bodies, and human rights organizations, to intervene immediately. The situation is critical and requires immediate and decisive measures to prevent further violence, facilitate humanitarian access, and ensure the safety and protection of the Banyamulenge community. The time for action is now.
EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY, SADC, AND CIRGL
We call on these regional organizations to step up their efforts to mediate the conflict, deploy peacekeeping forces if necessary, and guarantee the security, well-being, and human rights of the Banyamulenge people. This could involve facilitating negotiations between the warring parties or providing logistical support for peacekeeping missions.
The world cannot afford to remain silent in the face of this escalating humanitarian catastrophe. The Banyamulenge community demands justice, protection, and full accountability for those responsible. As we write this, Minembwe is facing a humanitarian blockade by Congolese forces and Burundi forces in alliance with the militia Wazalendo. If you don't act today, tomorrow will be too late to save this innocent community in danger of Genocide.
